We spend a major portion of our time sitting and it has been proved that prolonged sitting can cause serious health consequences. Since our lifestyle and work requirements make it a necessity to spend time sitting in front of computers, problems such as back pain, obesity and cardiovascular diseases are increasing among adults. One of the best ways to counteract these effects is to have a good sitting posture.

Our Posture Experiment uses 2 external sensors attached to a chair to collect data on the user’s posture and creates a report of the collected data. The goal of this device is to help individuals in identifying issues with their sitting posture and help them correct it.

The prototype was tested on Campus over a period of 48 hours along with video. Apart from collecting data on the user’s posture the collected dataset also revealed the impact of work and daily activities on our posture.

Sensors: The sensors were created using two layers of conductive fabric held apart by a layer of foam sheet. As the user sits/lean on a sensor the two layers of conductive fabric will come in contact and act as a digital sensor. Three such sensors were used, one for the chair base and two for the backrest.
